Winter Sun in Las Canteras - Escape the Cold in 2026

While Europe freezes, we're at 20°C

Las Canteras, Gran Canaria 5 min read

Why Las Canteras Is Europe's Best Winter Escape

While London shivers at 5°C, Berlin endures -2°C, Milan freezes at 3°C and Stockholm drops to -5°C, in Las Canteras we are strolling along the beach at 18-20°C. This is not a tourism slogan: it is the reality of every single winter in Gran Canaria.

Las Canteras is one of the few urban beaches in Europe where you can swim in December, eat lunch on an ocean-front terrace in January and sunbathe in a T-shirt in February. And all of this is just 4-5 hours' flight from most European cities.

Gran Canaria sits at the same latitude as the Sahara, but the cold Canary Current and trade winds create a unique microclimate: it never gets too hot or too cold. In winter, while half of Europe relies on central heating, heavy coats and snow boots, here all you need is a T-shirt and flip-flops.

The contrast is staggering. Compare:

There is no competition.

Winter Weather Month by Month

| Month | Avg Temp | Sea Temp | Sun Hours | Rainfall | Highlights |

|-------|----------|----------|-----------|----------|------------|

| November | 21°C | 21°C | 6h | 25mm | Start of quiet season |

| December | 19°C | 20°C | 6h | 30mm | Sand Nativity, Christmas |

| January | 18°C | 19°C | 6h | 25mm | Lowest prices, tranquillity |

| February | 18°C | 18°C | 7h | 20mm | Las Palmas Carnival! |

| March | 19°C | 18°C | 7h | 15mm | Spring arrives, more daylight |

The sea temperature never drops below 18°C. This means you can swim all year round. In January, when the Mediterranean sits at 13°C and swimming is unthinkable, people in Las Canteras are in the water without a second thought.

Winter rainfall is scarce and short-lived. It might rain for a couple of hours and then the sun comes out. There are no week-long grey spells like in northern Europe. At worst you can expect 5-7 rainy days per month, and the rain often falls at night.

Winter Activities

Beach Walks and the Promenade

Las Canteras has a 3.2 km seafront promenade that is perfect for walking, jogging or simply sitting and watching the sunset. In winter the beach is far less crowded and you can enjoy the space like a local.

Surfing at La Cicer

Winter is the best surf season at Las Canteras. The La Cicer zone picks up the best waves between November and March, with north swells producing consistent 1-2.5 metre waves. Surf schools cater to all levels and board hire is available right on the beachfront.

Hiking

Winter temperatures are ideal for hiking. In summer, mountain trails can be exhausting, but in winter the 15-18°C at altitude is perfect. Must-do routes:

Whale Watching

The whale and dolphin watching season runs from November to March. Boats depart from Las Palmas harbour to spot bottlenose dolphins, pilot whales and, with luck, blue whales. Gran Canaria is one of the best spots in Europe for cetacean watching.

Las Palmas Carnival

The Las Palmas Carnival (February-March) is one of the biggest in the world, rivalled only by Rio de Janeiro and Santa Cruz de Tenerife. Weeks of parades, music, drag queen galas and street parties. The atmosphere is electric and entry is free.

Christmas Markets

In December, Las Palmas fills with Christmas markets, the famous Sand Nativity on Las Canteras beach (the largest in Europe) and family-friendly activities. Christmas here is enjoyed in short sleeves.

FAQ

Can you swim in winter at Las Canteras?

Yes. The sea temperature ranges from 18°C to 20°C in winter, which is much warmer than the Mediterranean or the North Atlantic. Thousands of people swim at Las Canteras every day during the winter months. The natural rock reef (La Barra) creates a sheltered area where the water is particularly calm and pleasant.

How cold does it get at night?

Winter nights in Las Canteras hover around 14-16°C. You will need a light jumper or thin jacket for evening meals out, but nothing close to northern European cold. Inside apartments, heating is rarely needed.

Is it rainy in winter?

No. The average is 5-7 rainy days per month between December and February, and the showers tend to be brief (1-2 hours). It is common for rain to fall overnight and for the morning to dawn sunny. There are no week-long grey stretches like in northern Europe.

Do you need a jacket?

A light jacket or windbreaker is enough for evenings and overcast days. During the day, in the sun, you will be comfortable in a T-shirt. Layers are the best approach: mornings can be cool (16°C) and by midday it can reach 22°C.

What is the best month for winter sun?

February and March offer the best combination: rising temperatures (18-19°C), more hours of sunshine (7h per day), still-low prices and Carnival as an added attraction. January is the cheapest and quietest month, ideal if you want peace. November has higher temperatures (21°C) but slightly more rainy days.
